DACOR’s 2025-26 Mentoring Program is about to launch!. We invite DACOR members to register as a mentor for the program – if you have not already done so (see attached flyer). And we invite you to learn more about the mentoring program by tuning in to our virtual Information Session on Friday, September 5th at 12 noon EDT. Join information for this session was sent to all DACOR members on 8/29 via email or you can contact clskodon@dacorbacon.org to receive the join information again.
The Mentoring Program matches DACOR volunteers one-on-one with graduate students in GWU’s Elliott School of International Affairs and undergraduate students in the University of the District of Columbia’s Global Studies program. It is a one-year commitment, although we find many of our mentors returning to the program year after year.
The online session will introduce new and returning mentors (as well as prospective mentors) to the operation and goals of the mentoring program. Led by experienced mentors, FSO George Hogeman and Amb. (ret) Sharon Villarosa, the webinar will review the goals, features and strategies of the mentoring program.
At GWU, the mentoring program is led by Asia Studies Program Director, Professor Gregg Brazinsky, and International Development Studies Program Director and Professor Christina Fink. They will join DACOR coordinators George Hogeman (ASP) and Thomas Staal (IDSP) in matching DACOR volunteers with graduate students. The bulk of those pairings will be made and announced in September.
Contacts between mentors and their mentees are mutually arranged, typically monthly, either in person or by email or online (e.g. Zoom, Facetime, etc.). Students complete a mentoring plan in conjunction with their mentors laying out the students’ individual goals. To encourage communications between mentors and mentees, both receive a monthly newsletter from the Elliott School that lists coming on-campus lectures and information on internships and career opportunities.
We hope you will be able to join us for the information session at 12 noon on September 5th or view the recorded session (on the DACOR website) afterwards at a time convenient for you.
