The Kennedy Center, Continuing the Contribution to the Human Spirit
Description:
Known for emphasizing collaboration, innovation, and community engagement, Kennedy Center President Ms. Deborah F. Rutter is considered one of the most influential arts administrators in the nation. At the Kennedy Center, she oversees all facets of the world’s busiest performing arts center. Ms. Rutter will speak to the first-ever expansion in the Center’s 47-year history, called the REACH. The REACH will be a living theater, an immersive learning center, and a public incubator that breaks down the boundaries between audiences and artists. She will also touch on the three pillars that identify The Kennedy Center’s mission: World Class Arts, Powerful Education, and a Living Memorial.
From August 2003 through June 2014, Ms. Rutter served as president of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association (CSOA), employing her dynamic influence to further enhance the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s reputation as one of the world’s most highly acclaimed orchestras. Prior to joining the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Rutter was executive director of the Seattle Symphony, a position she held from November 1992 until 2003. Despite having a deficit when she joined, when Rutter departed for the CSOA, the Seattle Symphony had nearly tripled its annual budget to $25 million, had no accumulated deficit, and the endowment had grown six-fold to $24 million.
