DACOR - Event Information - DACOR

Event Name:
Bucharest Diary: Romania's Journey from Darkness to Light

Description:

In the 1970s, American attorney Ambassador Alfred H. Moses was approached on the streets of Bucharest by young Jews seeking help to emigrate from Communist Romania to Israel. This became his mission until the Communist regime fell in 1989. In the ensuing years, he periodically met with dictator Nicolae Ceausescu to confirm the right of Jews to freely leave the country. In recognition of his work, President Clinton appointed him as his first ambassador to Romania (1994 – 1997), where he played a key role in helping Romania move from its Communist past to democracy and to establish a free economy. In his new book, Bucharest Diary: Romania’s Journey from Darkness to Light, Ambassador Moses includes first-hand accounts of the diplomacy, both public and private, that helped Romania recover from four decades of Communist rule.

Ambassador Moses is a Washington attorney, author, and former partner in a major Washington law firm. He was special counsel to President Carter (1980-81) and special presidential envoy for the Cyprus conflict (1999-2001). In 2002 he was awarded Romania’s Marc Cruce Medal (Order For Merit) by President Ion Iliescu of Romania, the only American to have been so honored.

Ambassador Moses will be introduced by Ambassador Marc Grossman, U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan (2011-2012), Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs (2001-2005), Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs (1997-2000) and U.S. Ambassador to Turkey (1994-1997).
