Event Type(s):
Speaker Program

Description:
Norman Houston OBE will discuss the progress that has been made economically, Northern Ireland’s journey to peace and prosperity and the challenge of creating a united community and dealing with wounds. He will focus on the benefits of peace and the architecture that the Good Friday Agreement created within Northern Ireland, both on the island and within the British Isles.  Looking forward, he will also delve into why Brexit has impacted so particularly on the Northern Ireland political psyche and where do we go from here.

The primary role of the NI Bureau is to promote Northern Ireland as a confident, competitive and outward-looking region. They achieve this by leveraging diverse political, economic and social links to help identify potential areas for collaboration and partnership within North America. Such areas include: trade and investment; tourism; education; arts and culture; and politics and peace building.

Sir Norman has over 38 years of experience as a senior official in the Northern Ireland Civil Service. He is currenlty the Counselor/Director fo the North Ireland Bureau. He has spearheaded the Executive’s international strategy in the U.S. and Canada since 2007. During his time in Washington, Sir Norman has strengthened the Bureau’s profile on Capitol Hill and within the larger diplomatic community. In June 2018, he was awarded an OBE by Her Majesty The Queen of England.
