Bach is not boring!! Not if you know how pieces of JS Bach have entered the mainstream. Two master pianists explore the origins of the Variation as a generative musical form that influenced composers from classical to jazz. They share their talents about how JS Bach spun variations and conceived of his famous Goldberg Variations. Come enjoy this afternoon of musical enlightenment by two keyboard virtuosi to celebrate the anniversary of the Well Tempered Clavier I (1722) and the Goldberg Variations (1741).You might even come away humming his tunes and understand why !!
Pianist Ralitza Patcheva, on the faculty of Levine Music and The Catholic University, considers it her mission to present memorable performances of classical and newly composed works, and programs that encourage an understanding of the art and science of music. Her “ A Room With A Symphony” explores piano transcriptions, as does her J.S. Bach Retreat (with cellist Vasily Popov), and her lecture/recital series “ The Great Composers Club."
Sam Post, pianist, composer, also on the faculty of Levine Music, has performed with Yo-Yo Ma, been commissioned by the San Francisco Symphony, and is a founding member of Kassia Music, an ensemble-in-residence at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer. Sam's 2017 album, Dizzy Days, gives a taste of his dynamic creative range, as does his latest album, Post Bach. His chamber symphony "Sketches from Kazakhstan" was performed in San Francisco and Baltimore to rave reviews.
