The Feminine Spheres II - Heard But Not Seen: Duos for Oboe & Piano by Women Composers
3/8/2020
3:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Event Description
Hanchien Lee, piano, and Katherine Needleman, oboe, present the second in our new series on Women Composers. Seven composers and their works will be featured: from the 19th century, Clara Schumann’s  (1819-1896) “Three Romances,” to the 21st century, Alyssa Morris’ (b. 1984) "Four Personalities based on the Hartman Personality Test: Yellow, White, Blue and Red." We will also hear Vivian Fine's (1913-2000) "Sonatina,"  Marina Dranishnikova's (1929-1994) "Poème," Thea Musgrave's (b. 1928) "Night Windows," Jean Coulthard's (1908-2000) "Sonata," and, commissioned by Ms. Needleman, "Contrast for Oboe and Piano," by Hsu Chiayu (b. 1976).

Ms. Needleman has been principal oboist with the Baltimore Symphony since 2003 and has toured twice with Musicians from Marlboro. She and Ms. Lee are both graduates of the Curtis Institute. Ms. Lee  earned her doctorate in Musical Arts from the Peabody Conservatory, where Ms. Needleman teaches. Ms. Lee is on the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University.

Please join us to welcome the Spring season with an exploration of works composed for this unusual combination of instruments. Tea & sherry are served at intermission.
